AMC Undergraduate Fellow Eric Ryu is uncovering Scotland’s overlooked influence on the American revolutionary era through his history honors thesis. A triple major in history, health and societies, and classics, Ryu spent the summer in archives at the Universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and St Andrews, examining student lecture notes and library records from the 18th and 19th centuries. Supported by the Andrea Mitchell Center, Gelfman International Summer Fund, and the Wolf Humanities Center, his research challenges assumptions about the Scottish Enlightenment and highlights how transatlantic exchanges shaped the ideas of America’s founders.
