Intelligence & The Future of Conflict

Tuesday, October 13, 2026 - 6:30pm

PCPSE Auditorium (Room 010)

The Andrea Mitchell Center and Penn Political Union are excited to host Michael Vickers, former Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict, for a conversation on intelligence, covert action, and the future of national security.

Vickers served in senior national security roles across the U.S. government, including as Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict. Earlier in his career, he served in the CIA’s Directorate of Operations, where he was involved in covert action and intelligence operations, including U.S. efforts during the Soviet-Afghan War.

Drawing on decades of experience across intelligence, special operations, and national security policy, Vickers will discuss how intelligence organizations shape modern conflicts, the role of covert action in advancing U.S. interests, and how intelligence agencies are adapting to an evolving security environment. The conversation will also explore the Russia-Ukraine War and the current conflict involving Iran, as well as the future of intelligence and careers in the intelligence community.

This event is especially relevant for students interested in intelligence, national security, international relations, foreign policy, military affairs, and public service.
