Speaker bio:

Dr. Maxwell G. Burkey received his B.A. from Fairleigh Dickinson University and his Ph.D. from The Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Prior to joining Kean’s Political Science Program, Dr. Burkey was a Visiting Assistant Professor of African American Studies and Political Science at The College of New Jersey. 

Dr. Burkey’s teaching and scholarly interests are in American politics, African American Studies, social movements, and political theory. Dr. Burkey’s work is publicly engaged—his writing has appeared in The Baffler, The Star-Ledger, The Nation, and The Hill, as well as scholarly volumes and encyclopedias. As a consultant to Temple Contemporary, the art gallery of Temple University, Dr. Burkey contributed his expertise to “The Ongoing Revolution,” an art exhibit documenting protest movements that have shaped the contours of American democracy. Dr. Burkey is presently co-editing a scholarly volume for SUNY Press entitled Movements and American Political Thought that will make an original contribution to the fields of American politics and political theory, offering an important resource to civic educators.
