Mitchell Center Helps Launch New Program on Latin-American Politics for Penn Undergrads and Philadelphia-Area High Schoolers

Friday, August 10, 2018 - 12:45pm

With the support of the Mitchell Center, the Latin American and Latino Studies Program (LALS) has launched a multi-year project to promote greater awareness of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the role it plays in hemispheric diplomacy. The project sponsors two courses each year—one for Penn undergrads and one for Philadelphia-area high school students (taught in part by Penn undergrads)—both of which culminate in students’ participation in a Model OAS simulation held in Washington, D.C. In addition to their Latin-American focus, these courses are expected to connect to the Mitchell Center’s annual theme. Thus, given the Mitchell Center’s 2018-19 theme of “Democracy in Trouble?”, the fall course for the new initiative is entitled: "Democracy in Trouble: OAS to the Rescue?"

Other partners of the initiative include Fox Leadership International, the Netter Center for Community Partnerships, and Penn Global.
