The Politics of Self-Immolation

Thursday, April 11, 2024 - 4:30pm to 5:30pm

Virtual Event: Zoom

In many places around the world, the body is often used in an act of political violence, or an act of violent protest. Yet, self-immolators are often dismissed as struggling with a mental illness, or violent outliers even when they explicitly share their thought process with their target audience. What leads someone to self-immolate? What are the politics of self-immolation? And how do we make sense of an act that we are told is senseless?

In this conversation with ARCHANA KAKU, we will talk about the suicide of self-immolators in India, the acts of self-immolation that have precipitated the Arab spring, among others. We will break down the boundaries between "private" and "public" acts, and discuss the politics of self-immolation. Moderated by YARA DAMAJ.
